There are almost as many discipleship curriculums in use in America today
as there are churches. Everybody
wants to make sure that their church is discipling its members.
But discipleship is far more than completing a program, attending a
class, or finishing a workbook. At
its core, discipleship is becoming more and more like Christ—knowing His
mind, seeing His ways, understanding His life, and hearing His voice.
This is a life-long process. The
habits of a person growing in intimacy with Christ—spiritual
disciplines—are not just followed like a person baking a cake.
These disciplines have to be acquired, tested, and refined.
But
it is also not adequate for a person just to have right habits. A believer must find value in being close to Christ just
because He is worthy of our affection.
This balance between spiritual disciplines and being in His
presence is best found in a mentor / mentee relationship, and is most
successful over years.
We are currently pursuing this core value through our weekly root groups.
